Project Boss

So, I’m starting a new project to kill all this free time I’ve been having. It’s a little indie game currently dubbed Project Boss. This is on account of it being a platform game mostly about adrenaline pumping boss fights, and not all that lame filler games are usually bloated with.

Look at those sexy monochrome graphics!

I would like some testers to sample the difficulty of the first boss as well as offer general feedback. If this is something you are interested in, and I know it is, then click HERE for the current build.

You can leave  your feedback as a comment to this post, or email me at admin@we8bit.com

Enjoy!

Link! Zelda is your…

Egoraptor is one funny bastard. I remember this bit of mystery drove me pretty crazy as a kid.

If you are interested, the Zelda Wiki has this to say about the dialogue in question :

In the original Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Virtual Console versions of A Link to the Past, the uncle’s last words were “Zelda is your…”. The meaning of this phrase has long been debated, leading some to believe that the entire sentence would have read “Zelda is your sister”. Today it is generally accepted that it was meant to be something along the lines of “Zelda is your destiny”, though a more accurate translation results in “You are the princess’s…” [1], which still leaves room for speculation as to what the conclusion to the statement is. In any case, the Game Boy Advance version of A Link to the Past features a new translation with numerous changes to the dialogue and text, including the aforementioned phrase [2]. Through a certain glitch, it is possible to find the body of Link’s uncle that can be conversed with and will speak the original dialogue before transforming into Blind the Thief. He also does this when encountered in the Palace of the Four Swords.

Chatchat: 8-bit feline adventure!

Seeing as how you are an internet user, odds are you love cats! Cats sleeping on monitors, cats riding invisible bicycles, or just cats stuffing themselves into computer cases.

Cat’s really get you going. And that’s alright – this is the internet – everyone loves those whiskered bastards.

Is there anything better than a living, breathing, ball of fluffy adorableness? Why yes – a game starring said ball of fluffy adorableness!

Enter Chatchat - an retro styled multi-player browser game by Terry Cavanagh. Chatchat is a game where users can get their cuddly feline fix playing as a pixeleated kitty wandering a dangerously low-res town, avoiding dogs and chasing mice.

Look at all those pixel kitties!

Honestly there isn’t much to this game but I found it’s graphics and aesthetic charming. You play along other users, even though interaction is limited.  But it’s a free, easy to play, and fun way to kill an eighth of an hour.

Nintendo related merchandise at Etsy.com

Thought I’d just drop a quick line about something I saw today while browsing the interwebs.

Etsy.com, the site where people unload junk they’ve wasted too much personal time making, is selling some pretty interesting NES related goodies.

Zelda based hard drive

500 gb in a cartridge. Nifty.

Like the Castlevania mouse pad, a Kirby clock, and a Zelda SNES cartridge 500 gb hard drive. Not really sure how the hard drive works, but it seems pretty nifty regardless.

Whip into action with your very own Castlevania mouse pad!

So yeah, etsy.com has NES related junk. Go check it out.

Pier Solar reprint now available!

For those of you who don’t know, the Sega Genesis is not quite dead. 24 years after the release of Sega’s hit system games are still being programmed for it. Madness? Perhaps, but homebrew carts have long been treasured by a small faction of gamers: collectors and 80′s console enthusiasts.

Pier Solar “the ultimate MegaDrive/Genesis RPG!” is no different. Heavily sought after since it’s original release in December 2010, the game’s small printing run led to huge inflation of prices on the ebay market. Complete copies of the game were going for prices well in the hundreds of dollars.

But, lucky for you, that’s all changed now. A reprint edition is available right now for only $49! There’s no telling how long copies will stay in stock, so if this is something you are interested in now is the time to buy.

Here’s a video of the first ten minutes of gameplay.

From what I’ve seen the game appears to be solid 16-bit RPG, though I can’t comment on the gameplay since I haven’t had the pleasure of trying it out yet. The original soundtrack is also available for purchase on their website. I recommend you go check it out.

Retro Themed Merchandise

I recently came across a nifty little online store: ThisIsWhyImBroke.com. They’ve got all sorts of unusual goods ranging from Suit Pajamas to Water Jet Packs.

I was perusing their eclectic array of items when I came across this beauty: The Space Invaders Couch

Atari inspired furniture

Awesomely cool, looks miserable to sit on.

Talk about a conversation starter. Though I must admit it looks extremely uncomfortable, and perhaps a little fragile as well. But hell, at the ridiculously low price of only $5000 you can’t really expect your furniture to have both form AND function, can you?

Some other amusing items included the 8 Bit Shirt Tie, Pac-Man Ukulele, and Super Mario Pipe Coffee Mug.

Pac-Man Ukulele
The Ukulele just got 8 times nerdier.

That website is chock full of unexpected madness. Go check it out.

Neo Geo Handheld – sleek portable gaming at your fingertips

SNK Neo Geo portable

Sleek. Sexy. Retro. Neo Geo Portable

Good news hand held gaming fans: SNK is releasing a Neo Geo handheld sometime in the near future.

It comes prepackaged with 20 retro games and sports a sleek smartphone like design. Looks as if the iPhone and the 3DS had a lovechild. Considering Apple’s obsession with suing over product similarities a lawsuit may be in SNK’s near future. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Neo Geo Portable Profile

Uh oh, looks somewhat iPhone-ish from this angle!

In the meantime here are the specs:

  • 4.3 inch screen
  • SD card slot
  • 2 GBs of internal storage
  • Audio/Video out port
  • Four face buttons
  • Four shoulder buttons
  • Thumbstick

Not a lot of information is available on how this handheld can be expanded beyond the original library of games, or what sort of other features are going to be available after release.

Still, this looks to be an interesting piece of hardware. We’ll keep up on it’s development.

Gamestop Retro Goodness

Gamestop Retro Vault

Trade your PowerUp points for old-school goodness!

If retro gaming is your thing then this bit of news is right up your alley.

Gamestop PowerUp points can now be redeemed for old-school games and peripherals at their Retro Game Vault. Though some are arguing the cost in points is a bit disproportionate to the value of the merchandise, the opportunity to redeem your points to pad your retro gaming collection is a welcome opportunity for many gamers. While the catalog is currently a little limited in scope there are more items coming soon.

If you are both a Gamestop customer and a retro game collector this might be a golden opportunity. Check it out.
